Little Bit Late - But Better Late Than Never
Hey everyone!
While I have not been posting a lot lately I've been up to a lot. Will be posting more about the partnerships coming soon. In the meantime, I will show some pictures from the Damaged Exhibit that Laura and I were lucky enough to attend the star studded opening for.
The Exhibit I'm referring to was Shepard Fairey's largest ever L.A. Solo show. In attendance of the opening were none other than Flavor Flav, L.L. Cool J, Perry Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Terry Crews, D*Face, Ron English, and more! (check the L.A. Times photo's here)
We ended up watching the Hulu Documentary before hand to get a little more pumped, which was tough as I RSVP'd roughly a week in advance ( 30,000 people RSVP'd and they only let in as many as they could get through in the few hours it was open). So we promptly lined up as quickly as we could. And the Line Just kept going after!!!!
So as we waited for a good three hours we finally made it up to the front. And man was it worth it. We got to see some Huge pieces, some little, they were running a press in the main gallery. There was sculpture, prints, multi-media images, it was an experience for sure.
It's always one thing to see images of an artist you appreciate online, in print, and small/reduced. But seeing something this big, this extravagant, and well thought out is just insane. Just some of the Wall sized images with people in front show the scale of these works and paintings. It's just incredible to see such talent in person. I have been following the work of Shep for some time now. My first introduction was a GIANT image in me friends room. I remember asking "what the hell is that?" and his reply was "My sister was in Europe and these were all over the place." This must have been like 98-99? I immediately fell in love the graphic. Flash forward to going to school, learning about printing, and taking more print making courses. The more I learned, the more I saw, the more I loved. The Striking Black, Red and White. Then finding out he owned OBEY the clothing brand! I did more and more research, reading the ART LTD. Magazine that featured his work alongside Robbie Conal. Seeing 'Exit through the gift shop' and getting excited because here was video of him making these giant wheat paste images in the Kinko's I would soon be working at in Los Angeles. Then moving to L.A. and seeing his work all over town. Suffice to say his work has had an impact!
So when the opportunity arose and I saw the RSVP come up, bit at the chance, gladly waited in line, luckily made it in with 20 minutes to spare. Listened to music outside as it was like a Punk Rock warehouse party of my youth on the outside and great artwork inside. My 11 year old to now self was elated. Here are a few images of the show, and hope you had a chance to make it out to see before it went down.
Side note - after the show we are walking out and Laura see's a guy with very spiky blonde hair. Says aloud, man that guy looks like Billy Idol... Fairly certain it actually was. BUT who knows. ;)
